CheapMP Map Pack by Paul Maddox http://www.calcaria.net/pf/CheapMP.zip" target="_blank">download

As it turns out, cheap02 has the same supports as demo02, with a little more room in the river and another water level, so any demo02 clean record immediately transfers to this.

The PBS series "Building Big", one part of which deals with bridges, has a web site at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/bridge/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/bridge/index.html .
Highschool-level background on bridge building.
This link is also posted on www.bridgebuilder-game.com , where you can find more bridgebuilding links.

Records and Hints / A new Kind of Record?
October 21, 2001, 05:09:58 PM
hmmm... if the dirty record holder used the rest of his budget to build stuff that has no function except to collapse under it's own weight, wouldn't that easily beat it?

Records and Hints / Leader Board Rules Discussion
October 27, 2001, 06:51:36 PM
I agree with you that's it's hard to set record rules for a leaderboard; we have discussed this (including an "honor roll" system) http://www.forum.bridgebuilder-game.com/topic.cgi?forum=7&topic=5" target="_blank">here.

For posting on this forum, a FAQ would suffice that outlines the info you expect people to give with their submission, including explanations what TT, wet, 0bl etc. means. Then everyone could post the score for their bridge with all the info, and noone feel cheated.
Since I am not a records poster, I'll leave making the FAQ up to you guys ;-)

General Discussion / Pontifex Mailing list

Hi Folks!

This is to let you know that the contest advertisement service at mailto:news-list@pontifex.mendelsohn.de">news-list@pontifex.mendelsohn.de still sends out announcements of bridgebuilding contests (mostly Pontifex) taking place at www.bridgebuilder-game.com and elsewhere.

You should send me a mail at the above address if you want to be notified of contests without having to check the forum continuously; when a contest starts, I send a short email around. This is done by hand and very professionally, your email adress will be kept secret.

Michael

Current subscribers have received the following newscast today. To subscribe, send an email to mailto:news-list@pontifex.mendelsohn.de">news-list@pontifex.mendelsohn.de .
Hi Pontifex users,
here is the 5th issue of the entirely unofficial Pontifex News.

* The 7th Contest has now started. It's again run by Gray, and it's a Pontifex contest again! Categories are clean, dirty and "artistic" (Gray calls it "crazy"). Two copies of Triptych are again up for the winners in the "clean" and "dirty" categories. See http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/contest7.php" target="_blank">http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/contest7.php for details. Contest runs until August 19th.

* Bridgebuilder Contest 6 results
Congratulations to all the winners! Clean was won by Chillum (again!), closely followed by Genieser and Enqrypzion. 3rd place is not bad for a "newcomer", eh? Best dirty builders were Genieser, Dogon1013, and Correns. Bridge Artist: Gernot, for an almost erotic design. Bridge Inventor: Enqrypzion, for the use fo unusual techniques, to get a cheap yet sleek bridge. Check out http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/c6-res1.php" target="_blank">http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/c6-res1.php for the designs etc..

* In case you hadn't noticed, a Pontifex 2 beta is announced - read the announcement at the top of the CL forum!

* Gray is now moderating the CL forum as well. Now that was a smart move on the part of ChronicLogic! :-)

* There's a schoolbus conversion out (including sound!); what's more, Dogon1013 also made half a dozen new levels to go with it. The easiest way to pull them is to go to http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/" target="_blank">http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/ and look in the "Latest Additions" box.

Have fun with Pontifex!

That is because you are my extra special test person, Chillum. :-) (As if you'd need my service - hah!) Another proof, by the way, that these mailings go out by hand, which means that there'll be no spam.

Hi Pontifex users,
here is the 4th issue of the entirely unofficial Pontifex News.

* The 6th Contest has now started. It's again run by Gray, but this time the program is Bridge Builder, the free prequel to Pontifex, so all your friends can join - and win something, too, since the winner(s) get a copy of either Pontifex or Triptych! See http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/contest6.php" target="_blank">http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/contest6.php for details. Contest runs until July 25th.

* Pontifex Contest 5 results
Congratulations to all the winners! Clean was won by Chillum, closely followed by dogon1013 (Toby) and argonut. Best dirty builders were MART.ini, Gernot and BunnY. Check out http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/c5-res1.php" target="_blank">http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/c5-res1.php for the designs etc..

Have fun with Pontifex (or Bridge Builder)!

Hi Pontifex users,
here is the 3rd issue of the entirely unofficial Pontifex ews.

* The 5th Pontifex Contest starts on June 10th, and will gain be run by Gray of www.bridgebuilder-game.com. See there  for details.

* The results of the 4th Pontifex contest are on   http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/c4-res1.php" target="_blank">http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/c4-res1.php . Kudos to Gaff and Gernot, who won the "clean" and "dirty" categories. Lots of "unknown" folk placed, so be sure to enter the new contest!

* Chroniclogic releases Triptych, redesigns site
Move over to www.chroniclogic.com to check it out. Triptych is a "falling bricks" type game. Each brick consists of colored squares; line up three similarly colored squares in the jumble at the bottom to make them disappear. Triptych is completely physics-based (with very rubbery squares) and has rocket-powered bricks!

Have fun with Pontifex!

* As if winning the contest wasn't enough, Chillum has released a full-featured map pack. Go to  http://homepage.ntlworld.com/chillum/map%20pack.htm to get it.

* The 4th Pontifex contest is in the works. It will be held by gray, bridgebuilder-game.com webmaster, and starts May 1st. Check http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/contests.php" target="_blank">http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/contests.php for details as they become available.

Well, some folks regrettably missed the second Pontifex contest, so I decided to set up a mailing list you can join if you don't want this to happen to you. If ChronicLogic decide to do the same after their host change, I will of course tell you that on the mailing list so you can sign up with them if you so desire.

To subscribe, send an email to mailto:news-list@pontifex.mendelsohn.de">news-list@pontifex.mendelsohn.de . You should get an autoresponse that reads much like the following: Hi!

You were added to the Pontifex news mailing list operated
by me, Michael Mendelsohn (news@pontifex.mendelsohn.de).
You can use this address to unsubscribe from this service.
Your email address will not be used for any other purpose
than bringing you Pontifex-related news, and will not be
seen by anyone else but me.

I will from time to time keep you current on important
events in the Pontifex community. I will report things
such as new contests starting or ChronicLogic making
new features available through their site, plus any
release of major map packs.

I am in no way affiliated with ChronicLogic.
If CL decides to start their own mailing list,
I will report that to you as well.

Have fun with Pontifex!

Quote: from rrheuts on 2:57 pm on June 19, 2002
I thought it would be fun to recieve lots of updates and stuff, editors and maybe the source code after a while. But no.. not even 1 single lousy update after some bugfixes. Hmmm.. we were promised (and new buyers still are!):
"Access to any other free downloads or promotional offers Chronic Logic makes available to its valued customers "
"The ability to participate in our official contests. These will vary in nature and there will be some for both the economics-oriented as well as the artform-oriented bridge designer"
"Access to our members only forum where you can [...] download their posted bridges"

We got:
* a map pack
* 3 contests, quite similar, for the economics-oriented; no "hall of fame" yet
* a forum that does not allow file uploads

Updates=improved gameplay, (more) editors, and source were never promised, though I agree that'd've been nice and easily summed up as "warm fuzzy feeling" which *was* promised :-)

But then, I've said the same thing before, to no effect (perhaps the 3rd contest?). If you want to scare off potential buyers of pontifex, you have to say it in a public forum. Everyone who reads it here has already paid.

If Chillum designs the level (as he said he would, and gray invited him to do), winning becomes a whole lot easier (assuming he can't himself enter)! (Not that that will help me much... :-(
