General Discussion / Help with Complex 11

I just want to clarify... when people are saying suspension bridges, they really mean cable stayed, right?
Correct. For those of you who don't know the difference(like me, untill a couple of weeks ago): Suspension bridges have one large cable going from tower to tower with many samller ones supporting individual sections of the bridge. Similarly, cable stayed bridges use many cables to support the bridge, but they all come out from the top of the tower, and there is no large cable supporting them. For a good simple discription of all types of bridges, www.encarta.com has a good article, just search for "bridges".

General Discussion / Custom Forum Titles
October 24, 2001, 10:17:09 PM
I only suggested number of posts because it is coded into the forum software. This would seem to be the easiest to do to me. However, I agree that someone could post a lot and know very little (Exhibit A, yours truly ). My only inspiration for this idea came from Grey's message board on bridgebuilder-game.com. His titles go mostly by number of posts too.

I know I posted a similar topic in the Misc. section, but I don't think anybody reads the posts in there. I was wondering what you guys (or gals) would think of having different titles for the forum based on your number of posts. My suggestions for new titles were:

0 posts - neophyte (it means beginner)
25 - Recruit
50 - Fellow
75 - Autodidact (well knowledged self taught person)
100 - Prodigy
150 - Mastermind
200 - Pontifex Minumus
300 - Pontifex
Pontifex Maximus would be reserved for winners of contests.

But those are suggestions at best. What are your thoughts on this?

Besides, Pontifex has never claimed to be a 100% accurate simulator. I've played some that are (structural engineering challenge comes to mind) and they aren't nearly as fun as Pontifex because they are too hard to make any good looking bridges. Pontifex still uses many 'real-life' engineering principles and is great fun too. I like Pontifex, realism quirks and all. http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

May I suggest the colors white, black or blue? They tend to be easy on the eyes. Otherwise, good site. I hope to see it turn out great.

General Discussion / Strategies on beginning a level

I made the deck curve up two boxes over two spans, even out, and then go back down, above that i have a heavy steel arch that follows the same pattern with large triangles between.

Speaking of rediculously low bridge costs, Falkon2, How in the world were you able to get that low score for the first complex level? I've been playing around with it and can't see how you could have done it on hard. Any hints?

General Discussion / FiringSquad review Pontifex
October 21, 2001, 04:24:01 AM
Just think, if every user was to send an e-mail to the web site or magazine of their choice, they would almost have no choice but to review it! If you do send a letter though, make sure it is well typed (use all those great letter writing skills you learned in high school. ) People tend to be more responsive if you ask them nicely. :cheesy:

This doesn't hold up with all magazines. PCGamer has given high marks to some games that had a little known publisher with one or even no ads in the magazine. Mindrover is one that comes to mind. I could see this happening with the smaller magazines, where most of their money comes from advertisers, but seems a little more unlikely with the large magazines, who would lose subscribers if they felt the reviews were not accurate. But I may just be fooling myself.

It's good to see that other people might catch on to the Pontifex craze. I made disks of the demo and gave them to all my friends and the couple of them that didn't have crappy are now hooked. Has anyone thought of submitting the game to PCGamer or the like for a review? CL any thoughts? They mentioned the original once in thier magazine. Could be worth a try.
