General Discussion / Contest ended

Speaking of bridge collapses, there's everyone's favorite suspension bridge - the first Tacoma Narrows bridge.  http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>  Refer to discussions of new materials and heavy cable to support stiffening trusses.  Perhaps Callis' delicate solution to the torsion problem would make suspension bridges work better.

I wonder if it would be bad if we put up our screenshots now.  If people are careful to hide the cost in their screenshots, we could just look at the screenshots and sort of eyeball who the top candidates are, it wouldn't spoil the surprise of who actually won.

Yeah, definitely post a link if at all possible.  If anyone has a server and they wouldn't mind hosting peoples' screenshots from now on, that'd be most excellent.

I guess if you don't want to experience the unbearable pain and suffering of losing this "silly contest" then you shouldn't have entered a bridge.  I for one think that having winners and losers is an inescapable part of reality, and furthermore, that the posts in this thread to the contrary are very off-topic.  That said, since the contest results are due out any minute now I will post my entry.  All those who feel the least bit insecure about their entry need not risk the long-term mental anguish associated with clicking on this link:

General Discussion / I just would like to know..

This idea has been running around various forums, and I would definitely like to see a different solution to the problems inherent in a 3d physics simulation.  Arches and suspension spans are a really cool part of bridge design, and it chagrins me that I cannot do either with very realistic accuracy.

The internal cross-bracing that goes on in the current system causes some bizzare problems.
