Gish Support / Gish keycode lost
January 03, 2007, 07:02:03 AM
It can only be set to windowed after it is registered. Maybe setting byte 24 (yes, that's a hexadecimal address) of gish.cfg to 0 helps, but I don't think it will make the situation any better if you don't have an old file to base it on. I can post a 'clean' gish.cfg (as Gish creates it when it doesn't find anything) modified to run in a small window if all else fails.

General Discussion / Collection level 20 again
January 05, 2007, 06:22:08 PM
I have made overviews of all levels now, and corrected a not-so-blatantly-obvious problem in the previous one (the copy on the server is left uncorrected). It's more than I can reasonably host (55.3 MB) and I'm not sure if Chronic Logic would like it if I posted them all.

I beat my old 41.24 at collection level 20 by a tenth of a second. Apparently I didn't lose my skill after not playing for a long time. http://pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Gish Editor / I need everyones help

Good. If I think of something interesting I'll mention it. Only I expect this forum to be its death, as I just mentioned in another thread. It needs its own place on the web.

General Discussion / the offcial spoilers page!
December 26, 2006, 04:12:10 AM
The problem is that many things have ever been discussed, but get lost in a huge bunch of threads. There are lots of "cool things", including god mode (sorry, I don't remember exactly how and don't feel like searching through this mess only to watch it enter the mess again), all over the forum, but it's hard to find them. Some central place in article format, such as a wiki, would work better.

It's no big deal really.  And yes you are obviously a community member that i'll be asking lots of questions, some pertinent and some probably stupid.  I hope that you will give me input on the proposed update to the manual that I've proposed and already made a very slow start on. Any useful information about anything Gish, whether it's advice on movement through the levels, using vehicles and making them as well as the in's and out's of the Gish editor, secrets and anything else remtely Gish.

Keep in mind that there are a few other reasonably knowledgeable people around. DaKiller has been around for a long time and still is AFAIK, and Josiah from Chronic Logic (yes, those responsible for this game) also regularly checks this forum. They can probably answer most questions. It's just that I seem to have some deep knowledge and often went farther (e.g. automatically generating levels).

Tips for beginners? Umm:
- Movement is something you normally get a feel for. Not much more to say as that's the way I went.
- Using vehicles: don't if you want fast times. If you have to use vehicles, try to keep the cycle of certain 'vehicles' (I count moving platforms here) in mind. If you arrive just before one leaves, improving on the part before it won't generally help you get better times. You're going to have to wait for the vehicle either way. Only if you're MUCH faster you might be able to catch it in an earlier cycle.
- Making powered vehicles: understanding pistons and how to combine them? So many possibilities. I won't elaborate here.

What for example is your opinion on whether or not I should designe a new level in the spirit of the graphics as they stand now, or something a little more photo realistic.

I was thinking more along the lines of the technical side, but OK. IMO it's best to stay with the current kind of graphics; I don't see photorealistic graphics fitting in this game, and it can't support anything near photorealism.

Ah. Let's just hope that the less experienced are willing to read 800 pages.

Broken hardware isn't really personal. I just installed it on a temporary computer that should be reasonably fast, and it appears that there was at least one activation left. So I can actually run it for now. http://pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

I don't know why it's not on many download sites.

Gish Editor / Help ME!!!!!

Make sure the desired level is in the level folder in the Gish folder. Then type its name (including .lvl) in the text field at the bottom right, and press F7.

Regarding the restrictions:
- There could be a distinct category for cheats, as far as they are reasonable.
- Warps should be a category as well.
- Level editing should probably not happen at all. It would only get people to edit the longest level out.
- Turbo is the same as normal, except faster=harder. There could be separate records for turbo, but turbo runs should be able to enter the normal list if they're fast enough.
- It's too hard to enforce playing the entire game in one run, but provided we can trust the players it could be an interesting variant.
- High score screenshots are easy to fake.
- Replays and videos are both fairly authoritative. The disadvantage of replays is that they're platform-dependent. On the other hand, replays are very compact despite not being as efficient as they could be. They also contain exact timing information (to 1/50 second). IIRC two additional seconds are always recorded. Those should be subtracted, which matters when warps are involved. I think sending a replay with a mention of the platform, and an optional video, is best. Like screenshots, replays are also easily faked, but it's insanely hard to make a game shorter that way. The worst that seems reasonable is trimming the end where Gish no longer needs input to finish. Detecting that should be quite easy.

General Discussion / Gish cheats
December 05, 2006, 09:32:00 AM
Just let your son. If the initial attempt didn't work, don't expect later attempts to work. Apparently he enjoys playing games this way at the moment, and I think interference is unlikely to do anything good or in the direction you intend. He might eventually get bored and decide to play games the 'normal' way. Nothing is better than getting there (or not) without interference.

Regarding the cheats in Gish, they're not particularly cheaty, in that they tend not to make it ludicrously easy (;-)).

Feel free to use material from my posts in your manual. If you have any questions to test my memory, just ask. Testing my memory because I haven't been able to run Gish for a while due to circumstances, and I still can't.

800 pages!?

I am still around here, although I've been quite passive for a while. I have answered editor questions almost immediately after the editor was released, and I have made some of the more unusual creations. Does that make me experienced with the editor?

I've been wondering for a while what it's like to be color blind. I understand the theory, but that can't get me much further than not being able to distinguish between colors on what I'll call color blindness lines, or making color blindness test images.

Gish Editor / My ideal view of Gish+editor

Ah, Wouter (DaKiller) is still around. http://pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

I don't have a working Gish install near me at the moment, so I can't check.

Gish Editor / Tutorials are nice

I'm wondering why everything ends up in this nearly two-year-old thread. Anyway, the problem that causes "color fuzz" on the Mac is invertible, and in fact its own inverse! That is, try saving then loading.

Maybe I'll try to figure out what Gish does to the maps sometime. Would be interesting to know.
