September 08, 2002, 12:27:31 PM
Channel is up and running,

Just idle there if you can for now, Dont know what connections you guys have. But with my DSL connection i'm always online.

There's a bot running there with the name: ^Panda^ (dont laugh http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>). It's running on my server here at home. He will be online 24/7 if possible. I'll be online when i'm home.

BCS General / Mirc Channel

I hope everybody knows what  Mirc is http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> But is it not an idea if we start a pontifex channel or something? For the beta test to start with, much easier to discuss a problem there.

I already use Mirc for my counterstrike clan. And i'm running a bot myself. So I'll start a mirc channel now. And see if some people join.

For the people who dont know Mirc:
It's a program used by communities, it's a place where people meet in a kind of chatroom. Not just a chatroom! It's so much more. You have operators wich control the channel, and people join and talk or just idle there. It's just a place where you can find people with the same intrest and directly chat with them. It can really boost a community and make it a bit more personal.

go to www.mirc.com for the client and follow the instructions. If you need any help post it here and i'll try to help you. Maybe some people can put the channel name on their site or something (if they agree it's a good idea ofcourse ;) ).

This is where you can find the Channel:
network:        Quakenet
channel:         #pontifex

You'll find me there with the name hw|Blue (where hw is my clan tag for counterstrike and Blue is my nickname).

Important people will be granted the operator flag.

Next Version Ideas / some Eyecandy...
October 28, 2001, 08:33:28 AM
take a look at the topic '2 ideas', the rendering thing is a sollution for the people who want eyecandy, and for the people who just wanna play pontifex on their laptops.

about the sun thing: some shadows would be nice, the effect of the moving sun is much clearer to see then. But after a while the shadows would start to annoy I think.

Next Version Ideas / 2 ideas

Hi all,

Print-outs are nice, but it would be even nicer to 'render' your bridge. For those people who are not into 3d moddeling, rendering is the process of creating an image of the 3d scene created, but with the textures and lighting etc applied.
In pontifex you have the ability to move around your bridge, you can take a screenshot if you want, but a button with 'render' on it looks nicer. In the process of rendering, a sky can be created, reflection of the water is added, bumbmapping is aplied, all the nice effects http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>
And you really don't need a super computer, it justs takes a while on slow ones, and you can choose not to render  http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

My second idea was someting like 'global collisions'. In the current versions when your bridge collapses it just breaks and falls down (wich is really good, don't get me wrong ;) ). But when for insance 2 towers collide they just fall down not colliding with eachother. But with the global collisions plugin (:)) they would crash into eachtoher and then fall down. Or when a part of the bridge way up brakes and comes down, it crashes into the deck (or onto the train).

These are just some ideas, pontifex is great as it is, but this is the section for ideas so.. http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Me neither, I like to think before I build, not rush and try it. Then the game becomes an arcade game , not simulation... But hey, those are my feelings about it, maybe others love the idea http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

General Discussion / Pontifex Beta
August 26, 2002, 07:45:05 AM
Hey all,

Here is my attempt to get the forums moving again http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>
Maybe CL can open a "Beta" section in the forums? And maybe supply us with some info about the new game. It gives us something to talk about.

Some features would be nice, or... perhaps.. if it's possible.. some pictures? I dunno, atleast give us something to talk about http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> At the moment we're satisfied with anything i guess. Tell us about the levels, are they more difficult then pontifex? Are there any new materials? Is the train still in the game? Or do we have more vehicles to trash/drown?

Well hope you can help the forum, and I do understeand if all the info about the beta is still 'classified' http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

I can except all the things you say, and i do agree with them. And I (programmer my self) do understand the difficulty to update your own programs.

But let me take another game as an example: Clonk. It's not a very famous game (i think) though it has a vast community. And lots of updates. And the company itself updated it for about 2 years. Now the're working on a brand new version, completly diffrent from the thing they started. And they have released the source code. That gave the community a new boost, someone used the source to make a opengl verison of the game, wich really looks nice, and has great potential.

So i never meant that you promised us the source, but if you look at the opensource world, it's doing ok. I'm sorry if I sounded a little rude, but I've bought other games/programs from small company's (clonk for example) and have seen the story there. And i'm just a little afraid the communnity would die. So no hard feelings http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('>

AS for larger company's... I only buy really good games/programs, the others I ehm.. well.. i don't buy them. But for most of the small company's i do buy the software, just to support them in giving me a community and nice service + updates.

yep was afraid of that.. once they had enough of things they would drop it like a brick :/

They have a new toy to play with and let us stand alone. Guess it's the last time i try and help a small company. I thought it would be fun to recieve lots of updates and stuff, editors and maybe the source code after a while. But no.. not even 1 single lousy update after some bugfixes. #### this makes me angry.

At first it would seem to be worth the money, played bb1 a long time, and bb2 some time longer. But after finishing the levels (wich are not that difficult) the fun of building is dissappearing, with bb1 the levels were huge, and bridges were gigantic structures.

Hope you are going to rethink about not updating, i personally think you should try to keep it active. I'm not buying your new game in a million years, i forsee the same thing http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('>

Hope to be building bridges in a short time!!

General Discussion / I'm really disappointed.

About the copying stuff...

BridgeBuilder 1 was a nice hit, when i discovered it on a lan-partyand after a while everybody was playing it. This year the lan-party was here again with 1400 people, and i think i saw 2 persons playing bridgebuilder 1, and none playing bridgebuilder 2 http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('>

But now about the copying stuff... I think BB2 is not copied that much. people who do buy it will be carefull with it, you don't pay ฤ for a game and then give it away.  The thing about the 1 diskette is not true, even if it was about 400 mb's people would still copy it, don't tell me you don't have any copied cd's http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>.

I've seen this happen a lot, you buy a small game and expect a lot of addons,  and you wait... and wait... And nothing happens. I think it's the people who have to start upgrading BB, it's a small game, so release the source code, then people can really start adding value to the game. And more people will be inspired by it, and will buy it. Because they can expect much more, but when people visit the site and see the old news. they won't buy, they'll search for it on the internet, or just leave it.

But i guess we have to wait till CL quits working on the game and then they will release the sourcecode... And maybe the're working on the sequel of BB2! Wich i don't think is a good idea, cause everybody knows now there will be no future for the game...

Well that's my opinion, in conclusion i'd say: Gimme the source code http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

keep building!
