Making levels can be hard in the beginning, but once you know how it works it's pretty easy.
Wouldn't know about 4-player though, never did that.
Ok old driv plugged in an im about to patch gish,
are there any tutorials on level editing?
AFAIK there are none. But there's a reference file gisheditor.txt, and you can find some stuff here.

There are tutorials! Kampfschaf made video tutorials for the level editor. It might be hard to understand at times (thick German accent) but one also learns a lot by watching.
You can get the tutorials here having registered yourself: http://gish.gi.funpic.de/
The "GishEditor.txt" in your Gish directory is also very useful, e.g. for a overview about the tilesets and the controls in the editor.
four player is alright everyone seems to end up tied in a big knot but 4 play polo rocks! making levels is easy enough just follow the .txt
