I was just wondering if it is possible to save her at the end, and if so, has anyone done it?

Go to the far right. Switch to sticky mode. When the cage falls down it'll stick to Gish instead of into dropping into the lava. Granted you're in the right position.

Sure is.

I actually managed to do it on my first time through. I'm currently replaying the game to get the other ending.
