b: Are you sure those scores are for "Hard" difficulty?

Edit: c4 - 10912 =P Talk about a narrow margin! 6 bucks is barely enough to buy me some McD's =)

Records and Hints / Second Contest cost discussion

Aw man. Amidst the mess and confusion that is both my life and my current computer status, I only managed to squeeze in a meagre amount of pontifex time, so I threw this 109229 monster together in half an hour

Maybe next time I'll put up more of a fight, ne? =)

Lost... all... my... old... bridges...

Gah, its been a long time since I played Pontifex, and now I don't even have my old references to go by for designs.

Ah well.

I've downloaded the contest bridge. I'm still trying to get it to work, then maybe I'll post my initial score =)

Records and Hints / Strongest bridges?
October 22, 2001, 07:54:13 AM
Actually, if you have access to a paint program, you can test the strength of your bridge as a percentage as follows. (this is using PSP)

1) Take screenshot of max stress after train has run completely.

2) Open up in Paint Shop Pro, go to adjust/Brightness & Contrast

3) Turn contrast to 100, and brightness to 100.

4) Now slowly decrease brightness to -100. The moment you see black creep into your bridge members, record the brightness level, divide by two and add 50. This will give you percentage upon hundred of the strength of your bridge.

New challenge... Build the strongest (I.E. least deformation) bridges for all the levels.

Which bridges are stronger? They obviously must be clean, but you can build as much as you want as long as it's in budget.

I think a nice feature for the next version of Pfx would be a "max tension" percentage, sorta like the max stress indicator in the current build, but giving you the highest stress value among all the joints

But for now, an easy way to gauge the percentage of stress toward the breaking point would be to set your stress colors to white as no stress and black for both expansive and compressive tension.

No official compilation I know off so far, but don't hesitate to ask for a specific level on this board.

Records and Hints / Complex Level 10

As a general rule, when there are anchors above the bridge away from the banks, triangle spam isn't the best method.. triangle spam is only strongest when the only anchors are at the banks.

For this bridge I just connected a level deck to the anchors with lots of cable. I supported the center by sorta 'crossing' cables and hangong off that.

No, if you build any type of member, then remove the bar, the white dot at the end of the member still remains, and it costs Ũ. You can have an infinite number of them. Just build them very high up and the'y break from the fall =)

You can build an infinite number of those little cute boxlets at no extra costs, making the limit to the number of broken links the limit of your processing power =)

... Yeah, they don't seem to work in v19

Maybe it was related to the snap-to-grid bug?

Records and Hints / Leader Board Rules Discussion
October 28, 2001, 06:10:35 AM
I agree with Chillum on this one... everything goes except that falling bridges lose to bridges that are connected solidly to at least one anchor point for records. Come on, the anchors are there for a reason (And no, its not so you can start building stuff then delete the connecting link =) )
