Title: Help with Complex 11
Post by: Manie de on October 26, 2001, 07:40:33 PM
Hi there !

I got hooked to Pontifex two days ago and now I got kinda stucked at complex level 11.

After many many tries I beat that level on hard with 0 broken links, but my bridge is a little "weird".
It has to swing in place first, because you can't build the deck at ground level.

Can someone give me a general help how to solve this level, because I want to know, if my solution is ok, or if my brain is as weird as my bridge !

O, BTW, can somebody show my how to build arcs ?
90% of my bridges are suspension bridges, but I want to build some nice arcs (ok, I'm building them right now, but immediatly after hitting TEST, all my work is crumbling down)  :)

Some hints and tips for a newbie would be nice !

Martin.

Thank !

Now I know the difference between a suspension bridge and a cable stayed bridge, but in the end nobody gave me a hint, how such a "weird" bridge can look like.

I also tried some sort of "falling in place", but my cables arent strong enough to stand the stress and broke.

But nevertheless, thank you baggio ! Now I know that this level need something strange to be completed !

Bye,

Martin.

Martin.I just want to clarify... when people are saying suspension bridges, they really mean cable stayed, right? Secondly, I had to build a "weird" bridge to solve the level. By the way the anchor points are designed, and the constraints on where you can build a deck, you have to make a bridge that unfolds or moves into the correct position. Mine falls, but there might be other ways to solve it that I have not considered.

Correct. For those of you who don't know the difference(like me, untill a couple of weeks ago): Suspension bridges have one large cable going from tower to tower with many samller ones supporting individual sections of the bridge. Similarly, cable stayed bridges use many cables to support the bridge, but they all come out from the top of the tower, and there is no large cable supporting them. For a good simple discription of all types of bridges, www.encarta.com has a good article, just search for "bridges".

Yes, GG is a suspension bridge.  The biggest advantage/difference between a suspension and a cable stayed bridge is how they are built.  In a suspension bridge, the deck is built after the cable is layed. In a cable stayed, the deck is built outward from the support pier. This means that you don't require all the cable at once, and can build sections eaiser.  Without pretensioned cable, suspension bridges are hard to do, even though they can support the greatest spans.

What did SimCity get wrong?

I have double-posted by mistake/impatience, too, when the post seemed to be stuck - luckily, only one copy was created, I noticed it and edited it into a joke... :)

Pontimania addon: you're a pontimaniac if you know which thread this happened on :-)

When you try to build across water in sim city the game asks what type of bridge you want to use and gives you a list of choices. If you click the choice labled suspention it builds a cable stay bridge.

someone correct me if I am wrong

Ok here are my "thousand apologies" :)

After hitting "submit" I ended up with an empty page with a script error in the upper left corner.
So I went back one page and tried again and the same error occured.

So you can't call me impatient, because I took the time to do this again and again ! ;)

Now I know that if I'll get the error once more, the post will still be submitted (I hope) !

Again, sorry for that; no trick to gett my number of postings up a bit !

Mea culpa !!

Martin.

BTW: Still no examples for clevel 11 to show to me ?
