To have ships of different sizes that have to pass under the bridge would have loads of positive effects:
-it's one of the most obvious expansions for a game about bridges.
-it would be a nice way to make some levels more difficult (just preset one of , let's say, 3 different ships that have to pass under the bridge before you can start the train when you construct your level)
-it would make for more spectacular crashes ;-)
-for viewing pleasure, you'd also have to implement complete rotation into the engine (which I would ask for anyway :-)
a hieght requirement can already be created by adding a strip of land under the bridge.
another thing is the amount of time it would take the ships to travel under the bridge. I think a lot of people want the amount of time it takes to test the bridge to a minimum.
as for the raising and lowering. I think the idea is great I would love to see it
Hmmmm, this idea has potential. Let's here more opinions people. . .
Even better, how about having water bridges like they do in der Neederlands? Then you can have boats going across the bridge, and ships going under it!
oldie, you couldn't have been, you've got the URL wrong :-). Gray's site is at
www.bridgebuilder-game.com - because "U" make the difference :-)
Btw, there's a vote there right now on whether posting scores and designs during Pontifex contests should be allowed.
Excellent idea. It'd force you to make really high arches on some levels which isn't the case at the moment.
I'm not sure how feasible it'd be to implement, but bridges that could be raised and lowered would be awesome too :-D
If ships are added it would also be a good idea to let you cantrol the ship like you can the hav.
Thanks to Mendel for the correction. When they were teaching me typwriting in school, I had a place next to the window and beside the building there was a big railway bridge.
Thats why I have to write now by "Hamas" system (You know, two attacks a week).
What I would add would be a raising mechanism or something like that. I mean a wench or something, that would make I a lot more challanging and fascinating. Always assuming ships are added, for them alone would simply make no sense!
Has anyone yet wished for the ability to control the train? Especially in train view!
raising bridge, drawbridges and swinging bridges would be really cool. all that would be needed is:
a moter for raising bridges and drawbridges.(winds cable in when boat is about to go lets cable out after boat is passed).
Hinges for drawbridges. and vertical tracks to keep raising bridges from swinging around once they are hoisted up.
and last. curcular tracks and turning motors for swinging bridges.(note: swinging bridges are bridges that turn to allow ships through rather than raising. this saves a lot of energy for the small bridges.)
"I mean a wench or something"I think you mean a winch or something.
Although a wench could be interesting too...
I do believe the purpose of the HAV is to simulate trainview for your own amusement. Controlling ships though, that gives me the idea for perhaps canal builder. You'd have to make locks and channels and whatnot to navigate a change in altitude.
"Man the wench winch!"

I want the ability to place the HAV where I want before I start the simulation. Perhaps a pause mode for the "world," but for the HAV it is same as usual. I'd really like to be on top of my Tower level when I start the simulation. It'd be neat riding the structure down.Maybe I should put this in a new thread so that others (not interested in Ships) will see it too?

The idea is excellent !
And also raising bridges would fit; you could either build high arch or raising bridge.
Maybe a new level type besides "normal" and "complex" ? Or a sub-level to those, like "normal -expert" and "complex -expert" or something like that ?
yeah, having to make the bridge so that ships can go under it would be a nice challenge.
or even better, DRAWBRIDGES!
id be great! t'would be an awsome challenge.
How about a monster train? All the arches I've made so far have been just two levels (including the track). I kinda miss those huge multilevel bridges I had to make in BB
another idea i just had was to have it so that things other than trains would be able to go over the bridge. maybe multiple simultainius lanes of traffic. maybe a multy-level brigde that can handle cars, trains, penestriand AND a monorail! there's another idea! a train that follows and unorthodox track like a monorail or a maglev train. just a bunch of cool ideas.
There's a lot to this idea of having objects (ships, trucks, etc.) pass under the bridge. I'm sure one thing bridge designers have to think of is height minimums. My relatives are sailing from chicago to the gulf of mexico right now, and they have to pay attention to bridge heights, as thier mast is 55 feet high. I'm sure the designers of the many bridges along thier route had to think about who would come through their bridge later.
The idea to have them be lift and/or draw bridges is even more interesting to me, but I bet that would be more dificult to impliment than a simple height requirement.
there is alredy another string somwhere about traffic but the Idea with multilevel bridges is new
I agree to Pontifex Terzius. As I mentioned allredy, some mechanical elements would be interesting. As is is in the Bridgebuilder, where we made some very nice moving bridges like the legendary original level 15 (oh my god). For those who haven't seen it yet, go to the roots of Pontifex (http://bridgebilder-game.com/). I think since Pontifex is out, I haven't been there anymore. Shame on me!
