Title: Delay responing to input
Post by: on July 23, 2006, 04:30:31 AM
Whan I play gish on my main computer, ther is a delay between pressing a key and gish responding. I would estimate the delay at between 100ms and 200ms, which makes it pretty unplayable.

This problem has been nagging me for a while, but not as long as the long quitting time problem.

It persisted through an Ubuntu Dapper re-install, as did the quitting problem.

My other computer, an AMD /w an nVidia card has neither problem.

Try running Gish with the music and sound turned off and let me know if you see any difference.

Yes, that does seem to fix both problems.

Given that, I installed OpenAL 0.0.8, using the LD_PRELOAD method, which fixes the quitting time problem, but not the responsiveness problem.

It might be a good idea for you to start bundling a tested version of the OpenAL libraries. ;)

Try just rturning the music off and using the LD_PRELOAD to load OpenAL and see if that helps.  Maybe it is your ogg vorbis libs that are causing problems.

Well, somewhere in all my fiddling, everything started working.

Using libopenal 0.0.8 and libalut 1.0.1 is working perfectly (with LD_PRELOAD, of course).

libopenal CVS 2005/08/06 is now making no sound at all.

I was going to work on setting up a wine environment and using the Windows version, but it looks like it will not come to that.
