BCS Support / Error while loading shard libraries in Linux
September 25, 2006, 11:34:27 PM
If you are getting an error while trying to start bcs that looks something like this:

/bcs: error while loading shared libraries: libcrypto.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Here are some instructuctions for fixing it.

First if you have the Garage Games version make sure you have libcrypto and libssl installed.  No matter which version you have make sure you have libopenal installed.

Use the LDD command to see what libraries BCS is looking for:

ldd bcs

create a symbolic link from the version you have installed to the version it is looking for like this if your version is libssl.so.0.9.x :

ln -s /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.x /usr/lib/libssl.so.2

ln -s /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.x /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.2

(NOTE: the 'x' being whatever the users version number is, which can be seen
on the files found in the /usr/lib directory)

that will sort the libssl and libcrypto problem(s).

If you get an alutInit error:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libalut.so.0 ./bcs

It seems that Linux distros like (k)Ubuntu use libalut.so.0 rather than
libalut.0 (i think it is).

This is the version of the OpenAL lib that BCS is looking for:
libopenal.so.0.0.7

Current Projects / 8/30/06 - Web page update and more.
August 30, 2006, 11:18:10 PM
Just finished a slightly major update to the web page although most of it will not be noticed (hopefully).  I added an order page which presents options for PayPal, credit cards, and direct payments as well as gift orders.  This is a much more complete and clean solution and allowed me to get rid of all the game specific gift order pages.  It also includes full PayPal integration so all PayPal orders will be handled automatically and processed as soon as payment is received.  I also added Kingdom Elemental to the front page and I will be updating the Kingdom Elemental page with new screenshots, and some development/concept art soon.

I guess I should also mention we are extremely busy getting Kingdom Elemental ready for release as well as working on another game which we will be posting information on the web page about soon http://pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

We have updated the http://www.chroniclogic.com/ke.htm" target="_blank">Kingdom Elemental page with new screenshots and more information about the game, check it out!

We will also be posting some information about another game which is in development soon.

We are also finishing a contact system for product support and questions through chroniclogic.com.  This will help eliminate spam and direct your questions or support queries to the right places so we can address them quickly.

I have added the option to purchase Trash as a Gift.  This allows you to purchase Trash for someone other then yourself and have the game registered in their name with their e-mail address.

We are also changing our download system for full versions of most of our games.  This should work better with download managers and require less resetting of downloads because they will work right in the first place and not increment incorrectly.  It will be better for everyone.

The Giant Flaming Bear is now in http://www.chroniclogic.com/ke.htm" target="_blank">Kingdom Elemental!  We should have an update on the development and maybe some new screenshots and other information in the next week or two.

Also look for news about another game in development and a new development section coming to the web page soon!

I have finally completed most of the web page changes.  Hopefully there wont be any need to make changes for a while.  I still have to finish the support section, and make a couple very minor changes to a couple pages.  The web server was also experiencing some problems over the last couple weeks, but I believe they are all fixed as well.  Now on to more fun things like game development http://67.15.141.32/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

The new Mac just arrived today.  I will be trying to get the OSX contest 28 demo of BCS built quickly so that Mac users can still participate.  Hopefully getting the new Mac setup won't take long and everything will go smoothly with setting it up to build the contest demo.  For some reason it never seems to work like that though http://67.15.141.32/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>  I am also continuing to make some minor changes to the web site.  I have added the option of order several games as a Gift.  This allows you to purchase a game for someone else and have the registration information for the purchase be for whom you wish to give the game to instead of being registered to you.  Also reinstalling Windows on one of the computers here, Windows decided to stop working as it does sometimes.  Fun fun http://67.15.141.32/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Last month I did a little work on improving the web site.  I am still finishing up these changes, but I started looking into the Opera browser problem and discovered a number of small changes that should be made to generally improve the web page code.  I also have been working on a new logo for Chronic Logic, which I think is going to be pretty cool.  The only problem is it does not exactly match the website so now along with fixing up some minor coding problems on all the pages, I am experimenting with some minor changes to the color scheme which could snowball into a redesign.  Nothing is easy http://67.15.141.32/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>  I am also starting some development on a couple of new ideas.  Also working together with some other indie developers which hopefully will be producing some new games in the future http://67.15.141.32/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>  I will post more about that soon.

If you are interested in Indie games and the Indie games industry here are a few posts that you might find interesting:

This is about the Indie Games Conference (IGC) 2004, which is hosted by Garage Games every year.  I attended IGC 2004 and really noticed the split in Indie Games that Dan MacDonald is talking about:

Update:
It looks like the Opera browser problems with the website have been solved http://67.15.141.32/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>
