General Discussion / Game Convention in Leipzig
September 01, 2004, 05:54:14 PM
Chronic Logic will be attending the game convention in Leipzig, Germany from Aug 18th-22nd.  We will be with a company called Halycon Media and making a couple of announcements from there.  Is anyone else going to be attending?
CRAP.

Haven't had the time to check the forum in the past weeks and this is what I'm getting. I was in Leipzig from Tuesday to Sunday, working for my company, thus attending the GC from Thursday to the last day. Would have loved to stop by and meet you guys in person had I only known you were there, too.   http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>

General Discussion / Gish on Sony PSP?
September 28, 2004, 11:06:22 AM
Are those consoles actually powerful enough to handle the physics?
The PSP easily is, the GBA most certainly isn't. The hardware of the former system is comparable to the PS2, and the CPU of that one (Emotion Engine) is a number cruncher for the required calculations. And the graphics wouldn't be much of a problem anyway.

The problem is not the hardware of the system, it's that software development for consoles costs more than it takes to develop a comparable PC title. If you want a PC game, all you need is a PC (and a software environment of your choice). For consoles you'd be required to purchase some form of dev kit first. In addition to that comes another phenomenon - license fees. For each unit sold Chronic Logic has to pay a certain amount of money to the platform owner - no matter if we're talking about Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo here. Which means, it lowers CL's profits or requires them to sell the game at a higher price.

Not to forget one thing: eletronic distribution of software, particularly games, has yet to reach consoles. CL wouldn't be able to sell and distribute let's say a PSP title on their own (for download), they'd be dependent on retail chains and e-shops selling boxed units. And those aren't very indie-friendly.

General Discussion / What do you like most about Gish?
September 26, 2004, 11:13:25 PM
Well, I guess it's about the physics aspect of it. I really like the art direction, too, and wish there were more enemies and movie poster parodies, but it certainly is the physics element that sets Gish apart from other titles in the genre. It makes the parts where you get to interact with the level architecture more satisfying as it's based on a given and predictable ruleset rather than random triggers and movements you know from other jump'n runs. Having something respond the way you would it expect to is one of the things that makes a game fun.  It also means there's sometimes more than one way to address a problem if you simply know how to take advantage of the physics.

General Discussion / Who has beat Gish?
May 26, 2004, 08:48:52 AM
It took me abut 5-6 days. Of course, I currently don't have much time to play and see how some make it faster. Length was okay for me plus there's some replay value in the game. Of course, in a case like this there never can be such a thing as 'enough' levels since Gish isn't the type of game one would get tired off. (Whereas an RPG, for instance, can drag on for too long.)

General Discussion / Thoughts of a new player

I would have found it impossible to download on the dial-up connection I used to have, and which most of my friends still do.

That's why there's an option to have it shipped on CD...

Firstly, before I even got to play, that download system was problematic. I've got a reasonably good ADSL connection, but the download failed 3 times

I had *no* trouble at all downloading the game. Everything worked fine and I got as much speed as the connection can provide. Same for the other two people I know who bought the game. No problems.

Next, the game takes about a minute to load to the main menu on my laptop - a Celeron 2.8GHz with almost 512Mb of RAM

Well, I just checked it. Took the game 40 seconds to load. The funny thing is that my machine is 2 GHz slower than yours and has half the amount if RAM.

It feels laborious to get him to jump because the first press of the button barely lifts him off the ground.

And to me that's part of the challenge that makes Gish so fun. It's not your average jump'n run and in order to get him higher upwards one has to have a nice timing plus create tension via down key. I can see why some people might not like it, but it's not a design flaw, it certainly is a way they had it in mind and I had no problems with getting used it.

Right now I'm on chapter 3, the 7 planes of hehenna, and I'm finding it very frustrating.

Small remark: that's the most difficult world you'll encounter in Gish. It gets easier again afterwards, at least that's how I perceived it.

Perhaps a "restart chapter" option in the menu would be a good idea?

Agreed, that one could be handy in such a case.

As for the part with the swinging platforms you mentioned. You can 'let them go' and wait a bit. After that you can jump down from platform to platform once they stopped swinging. Or at least stay stuck to the swing that comes before the last swing and do *not* move to it. Just wait for it to stop swinging below and then jump down.

General Discussion / 4 -5 , Need Help

How do I beat the boss on level 4?

Lure him to the left as far as you can, jump over him (or via sticky mode along the ceiling) and to the right as fast as you can. If you're fast enough and make it to put some distance between you and him he'll stop following you. Now grab one of the blocks to the right and slowly go left again. The trick is to use that one to smash the soft rocks that keep the very large rocks from falling. You can sling the stone you're carrying by switching to unsticky and switching to heavy mode or jumping. (But if you made it that far in the game you probably already knew that.)

It's enough to destroy only one of the soft blocks because the rock above them weighs so much that it's crush the rest then. Of course, the tricky part is to do all that while the boss is about to step right below the heavy rocks. Thus being smashed by it then.

General Discussion / VS Game Suggestion
May 24, 2004, 05:57:01 PM
I guess we might see some more VS games in the future, and this one should be quite easy to realize: volley ball. Two blobs, a net in the middle and one ball. Which is not allowed to touch the ground. The alternate version could feature some (moving?) mid-air obstacles who spice things a little more up and could make the ball bounce around.

General Discussion / New Level?
June 28, 2004, 09:05:06 AM
yes.. I'm a bit confused right now. I'd love to know what's up
Well, it's simple. They're testing and preparing the new patch. And as long as that one is not out there's no sense in having the other, broken patch available online. After all, most players probably haven't that one installed yet.

General Discussion / Patch
June 06, 2004, 09:04:21 PM
Well, the next patch ...
The developers are currently working on a new update that will feature a new VS. Mode and probably some additional levels. That one is supposed to come out in a few weeks. (May 25th)

General Discussion / The Music of Gish

Check the credits, they do list the studio responsible for the sountrack. (In case you haven't done that yet, of course.)

I was just wondering if it is possible to save her at the end, and if so, has anyone done it?

Go to the far right. Switch to sticky mode. When the cage falls down it'll stick to Gish instead of into dropping into the lava. Granted you're in the right position.

General Discussion / Level Editor?
May 24, 2004, 05:49:14 PM
I am very disapointed and quite mad about that.

Why? They never said that the initial release of Gish will feature a level editor.
