Records and Hints / Strongest bridges?
October 31, 2001, 02:53:38 PM
The one problem with Quake-testing a bridge is that even if the bridge is subjected to 5 seconds of "bridge-time" quaking, the way the game does earthquakes is random, and so in that time, the quake my jolt side to side harshly and quickly, or just wiggle back and forth a little, producing extremely different results.

I made the Sears Tower, and unlike some towers, it stands up quite nicely in Pontifex.

Well, as you can see, it's got a lot of extra cabling that isn't in the real bridge to provide enough strength at the initial moment of bridge flop.

Nevarmore, you should post the bridge you described, I can't quite make out your description, and I'd like to see what you're talking about.

I guess everyone is waiting for the next version, or the next contest, whichever comes first.

Hrm, not exactly the kind of conversation I was hoping to start.  You know Andy, you don't have to post a lot to prove that you are r33t.  In fact, when you post a lot, you're more likely to say something really stupid, or worse, get flamed.  I have started a new thread with a more descriptive topic where hopefully people will talk about their ideas for the next contest, and not about how they like to post a lot to inflate their title.  My apologies.

General Discussion / Next Contest Ideas!!!!!!!!
November 03, 2001, 07:03:37 PM
Personally, I would like to see a longer span for the next contest; something akin to the spans in the original bridge builder, though perhaps not quite as long, as I don't know if it is possible to cross such a lengthy span given the new physics.  I have a suspicion that a span any longer than the one for the first contest cannot be crossed by the monkey-bridge concept, or by the low arched roadway, and would thus provide room for more creativity.

General Discussion / Contest Bridge?

Speaking of links that break that serve no structural purpose, what if a bridge design made no usage of the roadway structural steel?  Perhaps this should be a post to future versions, but every once in a while a bridge design doesn't require the metal on the sides of roadway.  Is it fair to require that these links don't break either?

Here's a question... what was that roadway cheat all about?

I for one hope very much that people don't post their costs immediately after the deadline, because ChronicLogic's server can't handle too many simultaneous users, and an influx of Pfx Contest result submissions at 7 pm EST tonight would probably crap out their server.  http://www.pontifex2.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('>

I must say, your bridge is the bomb.  After I submitted a bridge very similar to Gray's I toyed around with the monkey bridge concept, but alas, I couldn't even keep all the links from breaking, let alone break the 90k barrier with it.  I must say, you downright smashed through it, and never looked back.  I look forward to duking it out with you fellows again in Contest 2.

Tip for next time:  don't use heavy steel.  If you need heavy steel, you're probably doing it wrong.  I'm intrigued by the wide range of pricing and strength in the subtle variations on the arch design.  Looking forward to a longer span next time....
